History

In the early 1800s, in search of fine beaver pelts in northwestern Wyoming, John Colter discovered a region unlike anything he had ever seen, a land covered with thermal pools and steaming rivers, surrounded by shimmering forests and rugged mountains. With only a pair of snowshoes, a gun, some ammunition, and a few blankets, he had solitarily wandered over 500 miles to discover one of the most beautiful and varied landscapes in America. Colter returned to his home with wild tales of such things as catching fish in fresh water and then cooking them on the hook in a nearby boiling stream. For most nineteenth century settlers, his accounts sounded more like fancy than fact. In disbelief, his fellow trappers mockingly named the area "Colter's Hell."

In later years, other mountain men such as Jim Bridger, Jedediah Smith, and David Jackson discovered the majesty of the West in their own relentless searches for beaver pelts. During their wanderings, the Jackson Hole valley became the crossroads of the western fur trade. They, too, brought home stories of unsurpassed beauty and amazing thermal features that were doubted by most. However, others soon ventured into the lands known today as Jackson Hole and Yellowstone. To their surprise, Colter and the others had told the truth.

Today, the land surrounding the Tetons is protected so that future generations can experience the same grandeur that Colter and the other early arrivals first ventured into. When our guests return to their homes, brimming with stories of their time spent exploring this remote western land and being indulged at Snake River Lodge & Spa, there may still be a few who, even today, won't believe what they hear.
